12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
This Article of Faith is quite simple. We as Latter-Day Saints belive in following the laws of the land. Joseph Smith said, "We believe that governments were instituted of God for the benefit of man; and that he holds men accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society" (D&C 134: 1). God'd commandments are given to us to protect us from harm and danger. Likewise, the laws of the land are what protect us and keep us out of harms way. It's quite simple actually, we are to obey God's commandments, and we are to obey our country's laws. There are many Latter-Day Saints worldwide and we believe that wherever we live, we are subject to the laws of that land. There isn't much more too it than that. I mean if God tells us we need to obey his commandments, then it only makes sense that we are to obey the laws that govern our country. I know that we are given laws and commandments to protect us, not to restrict us. When we are doing what we are supposed to be doing, we will always be safe and we will be blessed for our obedience.
